新学期が始まり、キャンパスが若い熱気であふれる。カフェテリアも、コンビニもいつもいっぱい。生協売店でも長蛇の列でびっくり。みんな新しいことに夢中で、周りを見ている余裕がないらしく、若さにまかせて動き回る（”老人”にはぼーッと歩いていると突き飛ばされる危険が高まる！）

大谷くんの快進撃が止まらない。

先発したアスレチックス戦で、99マイル（159.3km）越えの速球を12回投げ、最高時速は99.6マイル（160.3km）に達した。昨季、メジャー全体の投球数のなかで、時速99マイルを越えたのはわずか0.51パーセントだという。

Shohei Ohtani is taking quite nicely to life in the major leagues.

For the third consecutive game, the Los Angeles Angels’ much-hyped rookie blasting a home run, hitting a solo shot in his first at-bat against the Oakland Athletics in the second inning on Friday.

Ohtani teed off on a 2-0 pitcher from Athletics right-hander Daniel Gossett. The ball landed just to the left of center field in the Angel Stadium rock mountain.

ANAHEIM – Shohei Ohtani could not reward Los Angeles Angels fans with a home run on Sunday, as they had probably grown used to from his three previous appearances in a home uniform.

They would have to settle for a brilliant pitching performance instead.

Making his first start at Angel Stadium, the Japanese two-way sensation retired the first 19 batters he faced before yielding a one-out single in the seventh to Marcus Semien as the Angels defeated the Oakland Athletics 6-1.

In front of a rare April sellout crowd of 44,742, Ohtani unleashed a fastball that touched 100 mph and paired it with a devilish splitter and an effective slider. He overwhelmed A’s hitters from the get-go, striking out the first three batters he faced and 10 of the first 15.

“That’s as good a game,” says Angels manager Mike Scioscia, “as you could ever see pitched.”

“The kid’s obviously incredibly talented. He totally lives up to the hype,” says A’s leadoff hitter Matt Joyce. “A pitcher that sits 95-98 with some life to his ball, and then he has a splitter and a slow curveball he can flip in for a strike when he wants to, and then a slider, he’s got the total arsenal.

“He had good command of his fastball,” says Angels catcher Martin Maldonado, “so the hitters felt pressure to swing at the splitter.”

Ohtani, 23, has fashioned a 2.08 ERA through his first two starts, with 18 strikeouts, two walks and four hits allowed in 13 innings.

And after ditching his high leg-kick for a toe-tap in his hitting stance late in the spring, Ohtani has been a terror at the plate, going 7-for-18 with seven RBI in four games.

Ohtani has been sitting the day before and the day after he pitches, so his next chance to extend his stretch of homering in three consecutive games will come Tuesday on the road against the Texas Rangers.

The possibilities now seem endless.

Perhaps Maldonado put it best when he described Ohtani this way:

“He never looks like he’s out of place. He looks like a hitter when he’s batting and looks like a pitcher when he’s pitching. It’s impressive. We haven’t seen that before.’’

＜産経新聞＞　マリナーズ２－８エンゼルス（６日、シアトル）米大リーグ、エンゼルスの大谷翔平投手（２３）はマリナーズ戦に先発し、６回０／３を投げ６三振を奪うなど６安打２失点と好投し、３勝目（１敗）を挙げた。試合後、マリナーズの地元紙「シアトル・タイムズ」（電子版）はこの試合に関する記事を掲載し、好投した大谷を絶賛した。
　記事ではこの日の試合について「マリナーズとそのファンは週末に大谷の素晴らしさを目撃し、同時に後悔と畏敬の入り混じった感情を呼び起こされた」とリポート。さらに「バッターボックスでは恐ろしいほどの存在感。そしてマウンドでは支配者のような姿だった」と３連戦で見せた投打“二刀流”での活躍を絶賛した。
　大谷はこの日、最速１６０キロを計測するなど、捻挫した足首の影響を感じさせない投球を見せた。対戦したマ軍の主軸打者シーガーの「彼の能力は本物だ」とする談話も合わせて紹介した。マリナーズはエンゼルスと同じア・リーグ西地区で、「年に何度も顔を合わせなければならず、プレーオフのための激しい戦いになる」と、今後の戦いを見据えていた。

Angels’ Shohei Ohtani beats Yankees duo to win AL Rookie of the Year

Shohei Ohtani became the fourth Japanese-born player to win Rookie of the Year, as the Los Angeles Angels‘ two-way sensation beat out New York Yankees duo Miguel Andujar and Gleyber Torres for the American League award.

Ohtani earned 25 of 30 first-place votes to run away with the award. The other five votes went to Andujar, who finished as runner-up.

“Accomplishing something this special my first year means a whole lot to me,” Ohtani told MLB Network through a translator. “Especially, I think it means a whole lot for people that have been supporting me this whole time, so I’m really grateful.”

Ohtani joins Hideo Nomo (1995), Kazuhiro Sasaki (2000) and Ichiro Suzuki (2001) as Japanese players to be honored after his debut year in Major League Baseball. The Angels star was particularly proud to be the first from his country to win the award since Suzuki did so 17 years ago.

“[Suzuki] is someone that [Ohtani] watched ever since he was a little kid and always looked up to until this day,” said Ohtani’s interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara.

The Angels had high hopes for both Ohtani’s bat and his pitching arm, and the 24-year-old lived up to the hype in his first season with the Angels, hitting .285 with 22 home runs and a .564 slugging percentage that would have ranked fourth in the AL if he’d had enough plate appearances to qualify for the leaderboards.

Angels slugger Mike Trout lauded Ohtani in a statement released by the team.

“I want to pass along my congratulations to Shohei for this special honor,” Trout said. “It’s great to see all of his hard work and effort recognized with this very prestigious award. All of us enjoyed playing alongside and watching Shohei excel as a two-way player and make history along the way. I have no doubt the best is yet to come!”

In 51.2 innings over 10 starts, he went 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA and 63 strikeouts, flashing the ace-caliber stuff that had teams eager to sign him primarily for his ability on the mound.

The bat was more impressive than anticipated, however, and Ohtani joined Babe Ruth as the only players to hit at least 20 home runs and pitch at least 50 innings in the same season. Ruth did that in 1919 — his last season as a pitcher. The Red Sox sold him to the Yankees that offseason, and he became a full-time outfielder in 1920.

Ohtani will serve as a full-time hitter in 2019, as he underwent Tommy John surgery the day after the regular season ended. The surgery will likely prevent him from pitching in 2019, but he should see significant time as the Angels’ designated hitter, though he might not be ready at the start of the season.

Ohtani, a phenom in Japan for the Nippon Ham Fighters, was the subject of an intense recruiting campaign after he was posted. Although he pitched just 25 innings in 2017 because of an ankle injury, in 2016 he had a 1.86 ERA in 140 innings and hit .322 with 22 home runs. Because he was younger than 25 years old, Ohtani was subject to international signing rules, which capped his bonus at $3.557 million and limited him to a rookie salary scale (the signing team also had to pay a $20 million posting fee to the Fighters).

そのうちの一人は、その後も不快な問題をまき散らしたあと8/1「辞任」。もう一人は、公的には平然と無言のまま、「私人」としては性懲りもなく、何の責任も感じていないのか、責任という概念さえ理解できないのか、周りの迷惑も顧みずその後も「好きな」ことをやっているらしい。（あとどのくらい猶予があるか？）

少し遠出して栃木県那須町の「日本一」のカタクリの里を歩きました。でもカタクリの里としては相模原に負けてました！それに代わって思いがけずきれいでかわいくて感動したのはイワウチワ。山の急な斜面に一面に咲いていました。
雪割草や、初めて見た「ネコメソウ」、里山の菜の花、さくら、辛夷など、見渡す限り花いっぱいの日本です。

Walked around the hills and mountains to see the “spring.” I enjoyed the sceneries with wild flowers. These were “iwauchiwa” or shotia, “katakuri”or dogtooth violet and “mizubasho” or skunk cabbage. I’m so embarrassed by their English names, as we call them with very beautiful Japanese words!
<Sally> Lovely photos, Akemi. True, the English names aren’t pretty, but their names are descriptive of their leaves. (I looked this up.) For instance the skunk cabbage is named that because when the leaves are crushed, they give off a bad smell. Still, I’d rather have something else about them reflected in their names! We’ll be seeing these in the next month or so.
Hello Sally, thank you so much for your comment. I think your naming is scientific/academic and our is more intuitive(?) I think the closer answer is these Japanese names are in “yamato kotoba,” (old Japanese). So they are named before science age! It is interesting to know why it was called “something.” I liked your answer very much, thank you, and hope you can see spring flowers very soon

今年、今のところ皆勤賞(?)のGTTイベント。今回はレンタカーなど5台に分乗しての快適フェリー＆ドライブでした。
鋸山の大仏様を拝んだあと、室町後里見氏が権勢をふるった南房総市へ。本田忠勝居城の大多喜城までいきました。大多喜町は小江戸川越を思い起こさせる古い街並みや家が多く残る美しい町でした。今年の桜は例年より1週間早まり、もう見ごろのところもあるようですが、大多喜は６分咲きぐらいでした。鋸山の山すそにはタチツボスミレた薮椿などが美しく咲いていました。

このタイトル、何かに似てる？ちょっと古い？かなり古い。でも昔のラジオの音声を思い出しました。昔々、ベルリン・オリンピック、女子200ｍ平泳ぎで金メダルをとった「前ハタがんばれ」です。
前ハタではない前川喜平さんは、昨年来「日本人の良心」を代表する時の人として期待されています。昨年来K学園問題で政府の方針に真っ向から異を唱えAbeの支配する政府に睨まれていますが、その分市民からの絶大な信頼を得ています。
1月ごろ、その前川さんが2月に今治市で講演を行うとのニュースを聞いた私は「行こうかな！」と思ったほど。物事の核心を真っ正直にしかも論理的に解き明かし誰をも納得させる頭脳明晰、しかもとってもダンディ、お育ち良さげな素敵な人です。前文科事務次官・前川喜平氏
その人が、先月名古屋市のある公立中学での授業（講演）をおこなったその内容について、文科省が執拗な「調査」をしたので、また大問題になっています。
その問題に対しても、今日の前川氏は「政府からの教育への介入の盾になるべき文科省が、なぜそのようなことをしたのか？文科省を責めるのではなく、その上に、裏にいる人を考えてください」と発言しました。

その、前川さんの「加計問題」ではなく「森友問題」についてのコメント。
“司令塔”は「今井総理秘書官」前川喜平・前文科事務次官が推測
 “キーパーソン”の佐川宣寿前国税庁長官がようやく国会で証人喚問される。前文科事務次官の前川喜平氏が「森友疑惑」について直言する。
 国政調査権のある国会に提出された文書が改ざんされていたとは、民主主義が崩壊する事態で犯罪的行為だ。こんな悪事を、真面目で小心な官僚が、自らの判断でできるなど、到底考えられない。文書改ざんは、官邸との間ですり合わせがあって行われたとしか思えない。官僚が、これほど危険な行為を、官邸に何の相談も報告もなしに独断で行うはずがない。文書の詳細さを見れば、現場がいかに本件を特例的な措置と捉えていたかがわかる。忖度ではなく、官邸にいる誰かから「やれ」と言われたのだろう。
私は、その“誰か”が総理秘書官の今井尚哉氏ではないかとにらんでいる。国有地の売買をめぐるような案件で、経済産業省出身の一職員である谷査恵子氏の独断で、財務省を動かすことは、まず不可能。谷氏の上司にあたる今井氏が、財務省に何らかの影響を与えたのでは。今回の問題は、財務省の凋落を象徴しているともいえる。かつての財務省といえば、官庁の中の官庁。官邸内でも、財務省出身者の力が強かった。だが今、官邸メンバーに財務省出身者がほとんどいない。経産省を筆頭に、他省庁の官僚出身の“官邸官僚”の力が増す一方で、財務省は官邸にNOが言えない状態なのだろう。
佐川氏は今、政治の新たな“犠牲者”になりつつある。彼は“誰か”を守り通すという選択肢以外持ち得ていないようだが、今や一民間人であり、自由人。もう誰にも忖度する必要はない。もし本当のことをしゃべり始めたら、官邸からとんでもないバッシングを受けるかもしれない。しかし私自身がそうだったように、そのバッシングが、身動きの取れない呪縛を解く道につながることもある。
私も加計学園問題より以前、文科省の天下り問題で国会に参考人招致されたときは、まだ役人体質を引きずっていた。政権を守るために忖度もしなければならないと思っていた。でも、そうした一切の未練が吹っ切れたのが、（加計学園の獣医学部の新設の認可に関して、前川氏が会見を開く3日前に掲載された）読売新聞の記事。「官邸はこういうやり方をするのか。ならば

もう何の気遣いもいらない」と、逆にすっきりした。だから佐川氏も本当のことを言えば、楽になれる。

4/8　　文科省を批判「教育守る義務の放棄」　　毎日新聞

 文部科学省の前川喜平前事務次官は８日、自らの授業内容を報告するよう名古屋市教育委員会に要請した文科省について「不当な政治的な力から教育現場を守る義務があるが、それを放棄するようなことをした。職員は教育と行政の関係を勉強し直した方がよい」と批判した。同市内で記者団の質問に答えた。
名古屋市が地盤の池田佳隆自民党衆院議員らが経緯を同省に照会した点に関しては「権力を握る人が教育内容に踏み込むことは控えないといけない。政治の限界を超えている」と非難した。
　同省は前川氏が組織的天下り問題で処分を受けたため、主体的に判断した調査と主張している。（共同）

Compounding this strategic, international crisis, is Mr Abe’s exposure on the home front.
A long-simmering corruption and influence-pedalling scandal dating from 2017 has suddenly re-surfaced, precisely at the same time as the Korea crisis.
The scandal risks implicating the prime minister’s wife Akie Abe. She allegedly helped lobby for a deal allowing a controversial Osaka based school, Moritomo Gakuen, to buy state-owned land at massively reduced prices (86% below market value) on which to build a primary school.

Reports in early March by Japan’s progressive daily newspaper, Asahi Shimbun, suggest that officials from Japan’s finance ministry, which was responsible for managing the land-deal, had selectively and deliberately removed from a number of documents submitted to Japan’s parliament critical details highlighting the role of Mrs Abe and some of the questionable circumstances surrounding the land deal.
The scandal has already had a number of dramatic effects. On 9 March a local official from the Osaka finance bureau killed himself, prompting suggestions that it was a result of the scandal.
At the national level, the controversy has created sharp tensions between the cabinet and the parliament, with leading opposition politicians arguing that the government has actively sought to deceive the legislature – a grave charge in a political system that places a premium on parliamentary scrutiny.
In response, a senior bureaucrat, Nobuhisa Sagawa, the former head of the national tax agency and previously in charge of the finance ministry section responsible for handling the land-sale, has been forced to resign. His immediate boss, Taro Aso – the finance minister and deputy prime minister – is also under pressure to resign, not only from opposition politicians but even from some of his colleagues in the governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
Mounting pressure
The worry for Mr Abe is that the scandal will lead to demands for his resignation and potentially might even bring down his cabinet.
When the scandal first emerged in February of 2017, he publicly stated he would resign if it was revealed that either he or his wife had influenced the land-sale. The latest revelations make it harder for him to dispel the impression that there may have been some undue influence, if only implicitly.
For now, Mr Aso, the finance minister, has made it clear that he has no intention to go, and Abe has defended keeping him in post in order to get to the bottom of the procedural irregularities in the finance ministry.

TOKYO — Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan offered to resign a year ago if evidence emerged linking him to a sweetheart land deal. No such evidence ever surfaced, allowing him to ride out the scandal and hang on to power.
But a government report released on Monday suggests that some crucial evidence may have been deleted — and that has put Mr. Abe back in the hot seat. An internal investigation by the Finance Ministry concluded that unidentified officials tampered with official documents related to the land deal by deleting references to Mr. Abe’s wife and senior members of his party.
The findings caused an uproar in Japan, where critics called for the finance minister, Taro Aso, to resign. At a news conference on Monday, Mr. Aso, a former prime minister, said he would stay in his post. But analysts said the latest revelations would be politically damaging for Mr. Abe as he prepares to seek a third term.
“This materially changes the outlook for Abe’s future,” said Tobias Harris, a Japan analyst at Teneo Intelligence, a political risk consultancy based in New York. “The basis for him seeking a third term is evaporating.”
For more than a year, Mr. Abe has deflected persistent allegations that he and his wife were involved in the arcane scandal involving an improper public land sale at a steeply discounted price to an ultraconservative education group. Despite repeated calls from opposition lawmakers for a broader investigation, Mr. Abe won a commanding majority in Parliament last fall, which put him in position to become the country’s longest-serving leader.
